Born in Fukuoka, Japan, Miyako Yoshinaga attended Keio University in Tokyo and New York University's Museum Studies Program. Equipped with the necessary skills, she began her professional journey in earnest as a curatorial assistant at the Asian Art Department of the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York. This pivotal role refined her curatorial abilities and ignited her passion for promoting Asian contemporary art on a broader scale. In 1999, Miyako established her gallery under M.Y. Art Prospects (later renamed MIYAKO YOSHINAGA). Throughout the twenty-five years of the gallery business, Miyako has organized and directed numerous exhibitions showcasing contemporary art with an emphasis on photography and Asian art. Her endeavor has positioned the gallery as a pioneer in introducing Japanese and Korean photography to collectors and art enthusiasts alike. Miyako has played a crucial role in arranging significant museum acquisitions as well as private and corporate collections. Her keen eye for talent and her commitment to fostering artistic exploration have made her an invaluable figure in the contemporary art business. Her contribution to the field was featured in PHOTOGRAPH Magazine’s “In Profile” column in November/December 2014 and in Tussle Magazine in Feburary 2020.

With a solid foundation in art history from Seisen Women’s University in Tokyo and practical insights gained at Royal Copenhagen and George Jensen Japan, Miyako DeRose skillfully blends her passion for art and design with her expertise in international business. Upon her arrival in the U.S. in 1989, Miyako pursued an MA in International Trade at Eastern Michigan University, further expanding her horizons. Her unique perspective is not just rooted in academia; it is also deeply influenced by her love for fencing, a discipline that fosters a harmonious connection between body and mind. As she coaches young fencers and competes internationally, Miyako embodies the spirit of cultural dialogue, making her a captivating figure in the contemporary art business. Since joining MIYAKO YOSHINAGA at the onset of 2020, just as the gallery transitioned to a new Upper East Side location amidst the challenges of the pandemic, Miyako has become an invaluable force.  Her discerning eye has not only identified but also elevated a diverse array of artistic talents across generations and genders.
