"Between You and Me" revisits Jyrki Siukonen’s first photo-sculptural work, created in 2019, which became the point of departure for his new series Hand in Hand (2026). Drawing on a found photograph from an old Soviet magazine, reportedly illustrating an exercise for improving typing skills, Siukonen duplicates and reverses the image of a hand poised beside a ball. A wooden partition inserted between the two mirrored images establishes a physical boundary while suggesting the playful exchange of a ball game. Although the gestures remain frozen within their separate pictorial spaces, the composition evokes an imaginary movement between them.
The work embodies Siukonen’s notion of material as both an opponent and a playing partner. By extending the photographic surface into three dimensions, he creates a subtle tension between stillness and movement, separation and connection, transforming a static image into an imagined tactile encounter.
