Dusk at the Crater's Edge depicts a view across the vast expanse of the summit of Maui's Haleakalā. Volcanoes are fundamental entities in Hawaiian and Japanese landscapes, and Clark associates these rugged vistas with a sense of interconnectedness across vast distances. In the format of a low two-fold screen traditionally used for the tea ceremony, the gentle mountain ridge horizontally continues edge to edge, surrounding the viewer. Clark looks to incorporate nature, even in the form of looming volcanic mountains, into inhabited space.
