The structure of this small-scale sculpture is reminiscent of Japanese engawa, a low-rise built-in terrace or porch extended from the inside of the house to the courtyard garden where you can enjoy the natural elements. It also evokes the openness of much of Hawaii's architecture, which often parallels the Japanese philosophy of maintaining a fluid relationship between interior and exterior.
