This region in the far west of China (Xinjiang), home to the Uyghur people, is a place that Lisa Ross has imagined for more than 15 years. Recently, the Chinese state has stepped up its efforts to forcibly assimilate minority populations, instilling a sense of urgency in the artist to display these images. Ross presents a challenge of reflecting atrocity by narrating a peaceful everyday existence. The contrasting but supplemental dynamics between the colorless desert and colorful subject is a creative process of re-interpreting and communicating these images at a time of desperation.
