The child resting on the bed becomes an “incidental subject,” the bright clothes vividly accentuated, contrasting against the muted earth tones of the vast Taklamakan desert, home to the Uyghur people. The recent assimilation of Uighurs implemented by the Chinese government urges the artist to revisit photographs taken over a decade ago, presenting a portrait series centered around the people of Uighurs in their everyday life as their existence and traditions are under great threat of obliteration.
