Koyoltzintli’s MEDA series is the result of her investigation of the primordial relationship between humans and the earth. Against the landscapes of Taos, New Mexico, the artist captures how Kichwa females interact with the natural ground by imagining how their ancestor, the first woman, first encountered Mother Earth. In Gathering Roots and Holding Up the Sky, the elongated cave engulfing the woman in nudity increases the visual potency of the composition, inviting closer scrutiny of the human-nature relationship.
