Yellow Rail is one of the most secretive birds in North America. Its population has declined in this century because of the loss of habitat (grassy marshes, meadows). Localized race in central Mexico is probably endangered if not extinct. Near threatened in the US, its cousin Black Rail is endangered in New York State.
