In the Autumn 2026 issue of The Classic, editor-in-chief Michael Diemar presents an extensive, 12-page illustrated feature on American photographer Melissa Shook (1939–2020) and the making of Your Eyes and Love in Grain and Shadow, a documentary directed by Sarah Feinbloom. Through in-depth conversations with the filmmaker and Shook's daughter, Kristina “Krissy” Shook, the article offers an intimate account of the artist's life, her pioneering photographic practice, and the rediscovery of her remarkable visual legacy.
Feinbloom recounts how the project began with approximately 150 photographs sent by Krissy, initially intended for a modest biographical film. The discovery of previously unseen Super 8 footage, filmed by Melissa during the 1960s and 1970s, dramatically transformed the project. Eighteen rolls eventually emerged, revealing lyrical scenes of family life, friends, and the vibrant streets of New York's Lower East Side. Interweaving these moving images with Shook's photographs and Krissy's deeply personal narration, Feinbloom created a film that captures both the intimacy of a mother-daughter relationship and the spirit of an extraordinary period in New York's cultural history.
In the second half of the article, Krissy reflects on her mother's childhood, artistic development, and struggles as a single mother and photographer. She offers a particularly moving explanation of Melissa's extensive photographic documentation of her daughter: having lost her own mother at the age of twelve, along with much of her memory of their life together, Melissa sought to preserve the fleeting moments of Krissy's childhood through photography. What might initially appear to be an obsessive photographic practice emerges instead as a profound act of love and remembrance.
The interview also explores Shook's artistic independence, her lifelong commitment to teaching photography, and the difficulties she faced in gaining wider recognition during her lifetime. Krissy recalls her mother's final years and the promise she made to preserve and share her photographic legacy. Following Shook's death in 2020, Krissy began collaborating with New York-based dealer Miyako Yoshinaga, leading to renewed international attention through exhibitions, art fairs, and publications, including Daily Self-Portrait 1972–1973 (TBW Books, 2023) and the forthcoming Krissy (Bilder Atlas).
Premiered at Photo London in May 2026, Your Eyes and Love in Grain and Shadow brings together Shook's photographs, moving images, and her daughter's voice in a deeply personal tribute. As the article reveals, the documentary is not only a portrait of an artist and her daughter, but also a reflection on memory, loss, motherhood, and photography's extraordinary capacity to preserve lived experience.
