In this video, Kristina Shook, who is the daughter/only child of the artist Melissa Shook (1938-2020), walks through the recent solo exhibition Melissa Shook: Early Self-Portraits 1972-1973 at Miyako Yoshinaga Gallery in New York City. Kristina, in her writing, reflected on those days in which she was part of Melissa's daily self-portrait project. "I thought it was natural for her to pose against the wall with the avocado plants that she had grown along with a few of my drawings on the wall. She would invite friends who dropped by to join her in the daily self-portraits. Often, I would stand, pose, or play with her in the pictures. I can’t imagine my childhood not having been photographed—it feels like it was a natural way of living and now I see it as proof that my childhood was filled with creative freedom and love."
