Kenji Nakahashi was born in Sakauchi (now part of Ibigawa), Gifu Prefecture, Japan, and grew up in Nagoya. He earned both his BFA and MFA from Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music. In 1973, he traveled to Paris and New York, eventually making New York his permanent home and the center of his artistic career. He continued his studies at the Pratt Institute Graphics Center in 1975 and the Art Students League of New York in 1980.
Working across photography, drawing, painting, and printmaking, Nakahashi developed a distinctive visual language grounded in conceptual exploration and an acute awareness of everyday life. His photographs often examine familiar objects, ordinary surroundings, and the subtle relationships between them, revealing unexpected meanings through shifts in perspective, context, and scale. In his studio, he constructed carefully orchestrated compositions, drawing on his experience in multiple artistic disciplines. Beyond the studio, he turned his camera toward New York's streets and architecture, experimenting with ways of transforming the urban environment into abstract forms and unexpected visual encounters.
