The calm crimson field in this work provides little clue to what Joo Myung Duck’s subject really was. He explained it was of a part of a bridge in Bilbao. It seems likely this is the La Salve Bridge’s well-known “red arch” designed by the French conceptual artist Daniel Buren, and we can imagine Joo’s appreciation of Buren’s soaring sculptural gate against the sky. However, Joo focused on its materials such as the solid red paint, which results in the creation of a space suffused with purity and the sovereignty of color.
