María Paula Suárez Emotional Vocabulary

August 18 - 20, 2023

New York-based Colombian artist María Paula Suárez is pleased to present Emotional Vocabulary, an exhibition of her recent works inspired by the potential of language. This pop-up exhibition, showcasing fifteen works on paper, including five from her new series, will be on view for three full  days on August 18, 19, and 20, 2023. The opening reception will occur on Friday, August 18, from 5 to 9 pm at Miyako Yoshinaga Gallery.

In her artistic process, María Paula Suárez ruminates her emotions experienced every day in her environment. She converses with herself while her emotions bounce off each other. She taps into her inner self to find unexpected connections of unsorted feelings through language. In her work, unsettling  yet light, phrases such as Walking Contradiction and Radical Vulnerability are extended in various scales, colors, and techniques i. e., collage, colored pencil drawing, embroidery on paper.  Each piece in this show is a testament to her discovery of the catalystic power of connecting words/feelings and different works as a group in unison to raise the issues of introspection and self-understanding. Suárez states, “Access to the right words can open up entire universes, and I've realized that the more we know, the more we can choose connection over comparison.” In Suárez’sunique blend of mediums and color palette, it is as if each texture or hue represents the unlimited shades of human conditions. In the end, Suárez’swork is not just a window into the artist's mind but an open invitation for viewers to engage with universal human emotions and shared experiences.

María Paula Suárez's life has been a cross-cultural journey; learning from this experience greatly informs her art. Born in Bogotá, Colombia, she ventured to New York City, where she delved into learning studio art at the School of Visual Arts and art business at Sotheby's Institute of Art.
