Garden View, Mānoa is a woodblock print depicting the garden scenery from the house of Clark’s grandparents with the visual information of the architecture removed, leaving empty spaces that delineated the contours of windows and a single chair. Clark beckons the viewers into his landscape of "shakkei" or "borrowed scenery'', a Japanese aesthetic that incorporates background scenery into the composition. Awareness of interior space is raised despite its absence in the image, allowing a visual shattering of the architectural barriers between indoor and outdoor, civil and wild spaces.
